5 Ways to Feel More Confident Wearing a Crop Top!

Let’s talk crop tops! Crop tops are a style have maintained popularity for decades and they aren’t likely to go away anytime soon. They are such a fun style but they can often times be a bit intimidating to wear, especially if you aren’t used to showing much skin. As a midsize girl I know just how uncomfortable it can be to add crop tops into your wardrobe but I’m here to tell you that you can feel confident and beautiful in a crop top too! Spring is on it’s way and crop top season will be in full force so without further ado here are my 5 top tips to feeling more confident wearing crop tops!

1) Find a Crop Top that fits you well!

This probably seems like a no brainer but when I first started buying crop tops, I made the mistake of buying ones that were shorter that I was comfortable wearing. I waisted a lot of money on tops that I never wore out of the house. So to save yourself that struggle, a good rule of thumb is to find a top that hits you right around your belly button to start. This way you can get used to the crop top look without showing more skin than you are comfortable showing. I usually have good luck finding longer crop tops at American Eagle and Target. Another option is to tie up a shirt that you already have into a crop top length (Check out my tutorial on how to do this here), or cut an old shirt into a length that you like. This could be a great way to test the waters without spending extra money!

2) Play with Layers!

This tip is probably the one that will make you feel the most comfortable introducing crop tops into your wardrobe! Trow on a jean jacket, a cardigans, a kimono, a flannel or something of the sort over the crop top. This will allow you more coverage so that you don’t feel so exposed while still participating in the trend. In general this is also a great way to add more dimension and texture to your outfit and will give you a more complete look!

3) High Waisted is your Best Friend!

High waisted bottoms always look great when paired with a crop top! They accentuate your shape while providing you with coverage for your lower stomach. When choosing your high waisted bottoms you will want to make sure that the waist fits comfortably or even loosely. If it’s too tight it can give you a “muffin top” which can be uncomfortable. If your favorite high waisted pants are a bit too snug in the waistline you can either keep them unbuttoned (as long as your zipper will stay up) and throw on a belt that is loosely buckled or you can do what I like to call the hair-tie trick (you can check out my tutorial on how to do this here)!

4) It’s All About Balance!

One common insecurity that often pops up when it comes to wearing crop tops is feeling like everything is too fitted. A good way to counter this is by finding balance in your outfit. If your crop top is more fitted, try pairing it with a loose skirt for example. If jeans are more your style try a pair of Mom Jeans or Boyfriend fit jeans. Both of these styles of jeans are designed to fit a little looser and are often times made from a stiffer denim which can help things look smoother.

If your upper stomach is an area that causes you insecurity try a looser crop top with a pair of skinny jeans, leggings, or a more fitted bottom. Balance is key!

5) Practice Makes Perfect!

This might sound cliche but practice really does make perfect! The only way to truly feel comfortable and confident wearing crop tops is to get used to wearing them. Push yourself out of your comfort zone. The more you wear them the more natural it will feel and the more confident you will become! You look great so own it!
